Third Interview With A Brighton University Design Graduate: Georgine Ellis

Read our fantastic interview with Georgina below!

CL: How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am a designer-maker who has a keen interest in producing figurative work, currently i am looking at birds and their interaction with each other. My work closely follows the habits of birds, I am interested in their daily activities, particularly movement. Through my work, I hope to engage the audience in their activities, reminding them to pay attention to the species that live around them.

CL: Can you talk a little about your discovered design style from studying at university?

University has helped me to develop expression within my pieces. I like to work quickly from my observational drawings of birds in action for example running chickens. This has helped me to develop an individual style.

CL: What part of the design process excites you the most?

My work consists of hollow, hand built pieces made from stoneware paper clay and often glazed multiple times. I enjoy the challenge of working through problems as they arise. It is only from these first hand experiences that I am able to reach a conclusion within my work.

CL: What are your values and ethics when it comes to designing?

Generally I feel if my work makes a viewer stop and consider the message behind it, it has been successful.

CL: If you weren’t a designer what would you have liked to be?

An art therapist.

CL: What do you plan to do once you graduate?

Get straight into a new project for entry into competitions and exhibitions.

CL: Where do you see yourself in 2 years?

Hopefully still in a busy workshop, creating and sculpting new work.

Go and meet Georgina and see her fantastic work at New Designers in London on 27th – 30th June 2012.
